we don't see these characteristics as defects, but rather as as a welcome testament to the unique, handcrafted nature of each tile. iron spots (small dots of oxidized minerals that turn a dark color in the kiln) or lime pits (tiny craters created when particles of lime come into contact with moisture within the kiln) may also appear on the surface of glazed terracotta tile. In some cases the glaze may be thick and opaque, and in other cases the texture of the terracotta clay may be visible under a thin layer of glaze. With the exception of our natural unglazed zellige, each zellige tile is hand dipped in a glaze before being fired, which means there will be variation in color between tiles. if you are looking to imbue a little more character and intrigue into your installation and shine a spotlight on the handcrafted, one-of-a-kind nature of each zellige tile, experimenting with texture and surface is a great way to do so. when paired with other zellige tiles, they can be used to create unique 3D patterns on a wall. When it comes to designing with zellige bejmat tiles, their extra thickness means they can provide a perfect hybrid between a traditional wall tile and a sculptural tile. this difference in thickness is a result of how the clay expands during the firing process: a smaller, narrower surface area means the clay is forced to expand outwards, creating a slightly thicker tile.
